Specialist Support

Cultural Identity Counselling

BACP accredited counselling for questions of culture, faith and family expectation, in person in Seven Kings, Ilford, and online across the UK. You should not have to explain your background from first principles before the actual work can begin.

What You Might Notice

Living between expectations

Holding more than one cultural world is ordinary, and it can still be demanding. The particular pressures within South Asian families come up often in this practice.

Two sets of rules

Behaving one way at home and another outside it, and feeling slightly dishonest in both.

Duty against direction

A real sense of obligation to family pulling against what you want for yourself, with no option that does not cost something.

Stigma about therapy itself

Coming from a community where this is not discussed, and carrying guilt simply for booking. Awareness is changing, unevenly.

Faith and wellbeing together

Wanting an approach that treats your faith as part of the picture rather than something to work around.

How Therapy Helps

What these sessions offer

The aim is not to pick a side. Therapy here is about understanding the pull in both directions clearly enough to make deliberate choices, rather than reacting to pressure or quietly resenting it.

Faith is welcome in the room. If it matters to you, it belongs in the work. Writing on this site covers Islamic approaches to mental health and the way Ramadan affects wellbeing, which gives a sense of how these conversations tend to go.

A great deal of this work concerns family. Where obligation, shame or secrecy are involved, the relationship counselling page describes the one-to-one approach I take to that.

Everything discussed is confidential. For many people that assurance is the single most important factor in deciding to start.
