Specialist Support
Trauma Counselling
BACP accredited counselling for trauma, in person in Seven Kings, Ilford, and online across the UK. Difficult experiences can keep shaping the present long after they are over. Therapy offers a careful, paced way to navigate trauma without being overwhelmed by it.
What You Might Notice
How trauma can carry forward
Trauma is not defined by how severe an event looks from outside, but by how it landed and what it left behind. There is more detail in these guides to understanding PTSD.
Memories that arrive uninvited
Images, sounds or sensations that return without warning, sometimes vividly, sometimes as a sudden shift in mood you cannot account for.
Staying on alert
Scanning for danger, startling easily, struggling to settle even somewhere safe. The body stays braced long after the threat has gone.
Numbness and distance
Feeling detached from yourself or from people close to you, or watching your own life from behind glass.
Avoiding the reminders
Steering around places, conversations or people. The avoidance makes sense, and it also tends to keep the fear intact.
How Therapy Helps
Working with trauma in therapy
You will not be asked to tell the whole story before you are ready, and you are never required to go into detail you do not want to give. Pacing is part of the work rather than an obstacle to it, and we build some steadiness first.
My approach is integrative. For trauma that usually means attention to what is happening in the body as much as the narrative, alongside work on the present-day patterns the experience left behind. You can read more about how I work on the modalities page.
Many people come with questions about whether what they experienced counts, or whether it is too late to address it. Those are reasonable questions and a good place to start. This exploration of PTSD may help in the meantime, along with reading on sleep, which trauma often disrupts.
If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, please use the Crisis Help page, which lists services available around the clock.
