Bereavement Counselling

BACP accredited counselling after a death, in person in Seven Kings, Ilford, and online across the UK. Grief does not follow a schedule, and it does not need to be tidy to be worth talking about.

What You Might Notice

Grief rarely arrives in order

The idea that grief moves through neat stages does not match how most people actually experience it. It tends to come in waves, and the waves do not always arrive when expected.

Waves rather than stages

Steady for a fortnight, then undone by a song or a smell. The unpredictability is one of the hardest parts.

Feeling out of step

Everyone else appears to have moved on while you are still in it. People stop asking, and it gets harder to mention.

More than sadness

Anger, guilt, relief and numbness all belong to grief, and often sit alongside each other uncomfortably.

Carrying the practical too

Admin, arrangements and other people needing you, with no room left to feel anything. Exhaustion is common.

How Therapy Helps

What bereavement sessions offer

Therapy gives you somewhere the person can still be spoken about at length, without worrying that you are burdening anyone or taking too long. For many people that alone is the point of it.

There is no timetable here and no expectation that you should be further along. We work with what grief is actually doing in your life now, including the anniversaries and dates that tend to arrive with more force than anticipated.

Grief commonly disrupts sleep and makes ordinary self-care feel beside the point. Where that is happening we address it practically, without pretending it is the whole picture. Some people also find writing things down helps between sessions.

If a death was sudden or traumatic, grief and trauma can tangle together. In that case the trauma counselling page describes how I approach the paced side of that work.
